Drafting Technologist – Building Envelope

Location: Ottawa, full-time in office
The Drafting Technologist will be responsible to support project delivery and drawing preparation for building envelope projects at AAR. Projects will include the rehabilitation and installation of new roofs, glazing, cladding, etc. The role would primarily support the Building Envelope engineering team, and may be called to support projects in other disciplines depending on workload. The position reports to the Drafting Team Manager and will work closely with design engineers within the firm. The work requires close collaboration with other engineering disciplines, contractors, and clients directly.
The Drafting Technologist will participate and assist in a variety of functions related to the preparation of drawings and delivery of projects, such as:
- Modeling of building envelope elements as part of the preparation of construction documents.
- Create and maintain a digital library of typical details and notes for use across multiple projects. Maintain and optimize drawing standards for building envelope projects at AAR.
- Close coordination with designers within the firm to advance project deliverables.
- Issuing construction documents such as drawings, specifications, construction documents, change documents during construction and others, in collaboration with the design team.
- Communication with designers, contractors, clients and other collaborators as required to advance project delivery.
- Other related functions.
This position requires;
- Highly adaptable and flexible personality, able to balance competing priorities and to deliver expected results on time. Our working environment is supportive but highly dynamic with changing priorities and exposure to varying project types and engineering problems.
- A degree in Building Sciences or architectural technology.
- 1 to 3 years of transferable experience in modeling and drafting work.
- Strong knowledge and ability to use CAD and Revit.
- Knowledge of Microsoft 365 programs and PDF (such as Bluebeam) markup programs.
- Ability to complete work autonomously as well as within a supportive team.
- Good communication skills and interpersonal skills, able to clearly communicate with colleagues, collaborators and client / stakeholders. Ability to communicate in French, both written and verbal is an asset but not a requirement of the position.
- High problem solving capacity.
- Professional ethical approach and demeanor.
- Ability to understand and interpret architectural and engineering drawings;
- Security clearance of all employees is required to operate the firm. All new employees are required to work towards obtaining a Personnel Security Clearance (PSC) level of Secret Level 2 with the Canadian Industrial Security Directorate (CISD). It is expected shortly after starting employment with Adjeleian Allen Rubeli Ltd. that the new employee will obtain a PSC level of Reliability. Security screenings may utilize law enforcement inquiries with mandatory electronic fingerprint requirements. Credit checks may also be included in the screening. Depending on the project, employees may eventually be required to obtain a security clearance level over and above Secret Level 2 which may require a personnel interview with CISD or another security branch of the government, which may also involve a polygraph exam;

AAR offers the following general compensation package for the above role:
- Yearly salary between $50,000 – $60,000. This salary range is applicable to the noted years of experience. The compensation package may be negotiated for candidates with greater role specific experience.
- Vacation credit of 10 days per year, or 15 days per year for an individual with more than 3 years of comparable experience.
- Group insurance coverage for medical, dental, life insurance and long and short-term disability. Membership commences after 3 months of full-time employment. Individual costs for each plan member are shared equally by the employee and the firm.
- Group pension plan membership is offered after 3 months of full-time employment. The firm contributes an amount equal to the employee member’s contribution to the plan up to 5%.

AAR provides a comprehensive range of services in all areas of structural and building science engineering for both new and existing buildings in the National Capital Region, Greater Toronto Area as well as other areas of Canada including Northern and Eastern Canada. The Ottawa office has over 50 staff, providing a close-knit group with a large experience and knowledge pool. The Position
As a Human Resources Generalist, you will play a crucial role in supporting leaders and employees in all aspects of the employee experience, and designing, implementing and supporting programs that enhance company culture and employee success at AAR. This is a new position for our company, and a true generalist role. Our ideal candidate is ready to build on the foundation we’ve created and will roll up their sleeves and bring their ideas and creativity to the role.
The position reports to the Senior Controller, and you will work closely with all company employees, including intermediate and senior leadership and, internal leaders in finance, marketing and IT.
The position is full-time in the office, within an environment based on flexibility.
Position Tasks include:
- Core Values: Act as a role model for corporate core values and align HR programs and initiatives with these.
- Employee Recruitment & Selection: Develop job descriptions, source and screen candidates, participate in career fairs, participate in interviews, liaise with 3rd party recruiters, reference candidates, prepare employment contracts.
- Employee Onboarding: Develop, implement and support an employee onboarding program designed to communicate culture, values and facilitate a smooth employee ramp to their position responsibilities.
- Security Clearance Support: Support the security clearance process as the Alternate Company Security Officer for new and existing company employees and backup the Company Security Officer.
- Compliance: Support corporate compliance initiatives by developing, implementing and/or maintaining and monitoring policies, procedures and training that meet legislative requirements.
- Employee Development: Coordinate and support the annual performance appraisal process by working with leaders and employees to gather feedback and complete documentation. Develop and maintain a mechanism to capture annual employee goals, training and development needs, and work with all parties on period updates.
- H&S: Collaborate with the Joint Health & Safety Committee on matters related to training, First Aid and other employee-related matters.
- Technology: Research, recommend, implement and maintain HR technology that supports business needs.
- Personnel Files: Maintain employee personnel records.
This position requires:
- Experience working in a professional services firm.
- Completion of a post-secondary education in Human Resource Management.
- Completion, or progress towards a professional designation in HR (CHRP, CHRL).
- An individual who has 3-6 years of related experience in a human resources leadership position. Candidates with experience outside the stated range may be considered with the appropriate skillset and knowledge.
- Strong understanding of the legislation that applies to provincially regulated employers in Ontario (Ontario Employment Standards Act 2000, Human Rights Code, Occupational Health &/ Safety Act).
- Experience in the development, implementation and management of corporate HR programs.
- Experience in recruitment, selection, onboarding and offboarding of employees.
- Experience in supporting employee development including performance reviews, goal setting follow through and professional development needs identification.
- Ability to use tact and discretion, and to maintain confidentiality.
